  She held out her hand. “Here, I’ll do that.”

  “It’s not a problem.”

  Panicked that he might check the second pocket, she grabbed up his pants and teased. “So I can check your pockets? After all, looks like you forgot to turn these ones out before you washed them, too.”

  And froze at the look on his face.

  Dismay. Shock. Panic.

  “No, don’t do that,” he said urgently. “I’ll check my own pockets.”

  She swallowed hard. Shit. What had just happened? She locked her gaze on his. What could he possibly have in his pocket that he didn’t want her to see? She gave a broken laugh. She certainly had something in her pocket that she didn’t want him to see.

  Is this what their life had come to? Secrets hidden in their pockets?

  She slumped against the headboard, tears in her eyes. Given what her secret was, she needed to know what his was. It would impact her future and her baby’s future in a big way. Was she up for this? Today?

  “Don’t cry. It’s okay.”

  She shook her head wildly. “How can it be? You don’t want me to check your pockets, and I don’t want you to check mine.”

  Morgan stared down at her jeans in his hands. He’d not intended to start anything, but apparently when he’d checked the first pocket, she’d gone after his jeans to throw him off. Or at least that’s how it appeared to him.

  He sank slowly on the bed, fear snaking through him. What could she be hiding? He could see the item wasn’t big. The space was too small for much and it didn’t bulge like a large object. He hadn’t checked it before throwing it in the laundry, which he normally did. Then when folding, he automatically shoved the pockets back in. He’d been doing laundry that way since his mother first taught him.

  He hadn’t meant to pry any more than he’d meant to leave the beautiful sapphire engagement ring in his pocket. Last night had been a flurry of clothes stripping, a repeat of so many nights with her. He was blessed. She wanted him as much as he wanted her.

  They were a perfect match.

  So why were they sitting here staring at each other as if across a huge divide? Him with his heart in his throat and her with tears rolling down her face?

  The worst would be if she’d cheated on him. What could be in the pocket that would show such a thing? A guy’s phone number? He wouldn’t know the relationship – for all he knew, it could be a client.

  No, this wasn’t about the items in the pockets, it was about trust. He trusted her. If he was wrong, life as he knew it was over for him anyway.

  He couldn’t let this go. He needed her to know how he felt. If she found the ring and turned him down, he wasn’t going to make it anyways. Life without her… no.

  It was now or never.

  If this was it, then they both needed to know. He took a deep breath and jumped across the divide.

  “First, you need to know that I love you,” he said calmly. “And that I trust you.”

  The tears rolled faster on her cheeks.

  “And that I don’t care what is in your pocket. Or what is in my pocket. I want you to open mine and take out what is in there.”

  She shook her head. “No, that’s not fair.”

  “Not fair, or you don’t want me to do the same for your pocket?”

  The tears poured. Shit.

  He moved closer and reached for his jeans now crumpled in her lap. She slumped against the headboard, a sheet over her bare skin, big fat tears rolling down her cheeks.

  “Stop, you’ll make yourself sick, honey.”

  “Look. I don’t care what’s in your pocket.” His alarm was growing over her reaction. She’d been upset over something last night, too. His mind kept going to horrible things, his gaze sliding back to her jeans to see if his guess could be correct. Had she received a terrible medical diagnosis? A full-size sheet of paper couldn’t fit in that tiny pocket, could it? Surely he’d have noticed when he threw them in the washing machine.

  Only he’d been distracted. Damn it to hell.

  He tugged her into his arms, grateful when she came without resisting.

  “It can’t be that bad and whatever it is, we are better off knowing so we can deal with it.” He rubbed her shoulders, grateful to see that the deluge of tears was slowing. “Right?”

  She nodded, took a ragged breath, and sat up. She lifted her swollen, red-rimmed eyes his way. “If nothing else, we need to know.”

  “You’re right. We do.”

  Chapter 5

  Shit. She took a second breath, feeling her world stabilize for the first time since this started. He was right. They couldn’t move forward if they didn’t deal with this. Her way was honesty. She couldn’t change now.

  He beat her to it.

  “Check my pocket first, please.”

  She studied his gaze, then shook her head. “No. I trust you.” And she shifted back and away to lean against the headboard again. She offered him a watery smile. “I’m sorry. You need to look in my pocket.”

  He laughed and tossed her jeans at her. “Not if you won’t look in mine.”

  Then he reached over. “I will show you mine instead.”

  She stared down at the jeans he’d given back to her. She’d thought it was the end of the world if he didn’t take a look, but then she realized she was a fool. He was everything to her and more than that, he was a good man. There were no guarantees in life, but she knew he’d be there for her – one way or another.

  “I want you to look in mine,” she whispered. “I love you too.”

  He grinned, and ignoring her first comment, he said, “And that makes this perfect timing.”

  She frowned as he reached into his pocket and pulled out whatever he had in there. She couldn’t see what it was. He reached over and picked up her hand.

  “I didn’t know how or when to do this, but I bought it a few weeks ago when we were finally safe and had a future to plan.”

  “What?” Curious, she leaned forward, but he hadn’t placed whatever it was in her hand yet. It was clutched tight in his.

  He took a deep breath.

  And opened his hand. She stared at the stunning sapphire ring as it was held up to her, his words ringing in her ears. She couldn’t believe what her ears were hearing. Couldn’t believe what her eyes were seeing.

  The ring – an engagement ring?

  Oh dear God.

  She stared at him in shock as he said, “I love you, now and forever, and I’m asking you to do me the honor of becoming my wife.” He took a shaky breath, a sideways grin on his face as he saw the shock on hers, and added, “Will you marry me?”

  “Oh,” she cried out softly, her gaze locking on his beloved face. “This was in your pocket?” And now she understood why he hadn’t wanted her to pull it out. Talk about ruining his surprise and yet being the answer to her problem at the same time.

  “Yes,” he said, “I almost panicked when I realized I’d left it in there and you had the jeans in your hand.”

  She shook her head. The ring was spectacular.

  But more than that, he loved her. Like really loved her.

  But he didn’t know about the pregnancy test. He’d been honest, but she hadn’t been yet.

  She carefully closed his finger around the ring and lifted her gaze to his, seeing the pain of rejection as he understood her actions. She hurried to say. “My answer is yes, but…”

  Relief washed over his face, then doubt. “But…”

  “You need to know what’s in my pocket before you accept it. Just in case,” she added nervously. She tossed the jeans to him.

  He was confused and scared, and damn it, she’d said yes, right? Weren’t they supposed to be celebrating? But her grip on his hand was so tight, the nails cutting in. She didn’t appear to notice. She wasn’t letting go of him, so that was good.

  And she wanted him to pull out whatever she’d been hiding.

  So he would. One-handed, be
cause he wasn’t letting go of her either. But she seemed to feel when he found out something that he wasn’t going to want to marry her.

  Just the thought of something so big choked him. He couldn’t bear to think of what she could mean. Awkwardly, his fingers fishing inside the tiny pocket – why were men’s pockets built for a full-size hand and yet in women’s pockets the space was so small you had to slide a finger in to pull the item out sideways?

  It made no sense.

  He finally grasped the sharp item and tugged it up and out.

  It was a small plastic stick.

  He turned it over and around and stared at it. No matter which way you looked at it, it was a stick with a faded blue end.

  Like what the hell was this? He lifted his confused gaze in her direction and watched as she struggled, one-handed, to take a small box out of the nightstand and toss it in his direction.

  A home pregnancy test kit.

  Holy hell. He grabbed it up to read the instructions. If the stick turned color, the test was positive.

  “Shit,” he whispered as he dropped the box and picked up the stick. Definitely blue.

  He raised his stunned gaze to her and said, “You’re pregnant?”

  She nodded. “Apparently. I was going to do a second test this morning,” she mumbled. “Just to confirm.”

  “Oh my God. You’re pregnant.”

  “I think so,” she stressed, “But…”

  He grinned. “Do the second test. Please. Let’s find out for sure.”

  He leaned over and gave her a bruising kiss. “I want to see.”

  She frowned at him. “I’m not going to pee on the stick while you watch.”

  “Yes, you are.” He laughed at her disgruntled look. “But not until we do this first.” He opened his hand and carefully placed the sapphire on her ring finger. “We’ll do this in the proper order.”

  While she splayed out her fingers, loving the look of the ring, he walked around and tossed the bedding back and scooped her up. She squealed in laugher. He carried her to the toilet and set her down. He returned with the second test kit and brought it to her.

  She rolled her eyes as he walked back out. She quickly followed the instructions then finished her business. She laid the test stick on the box and washed her hands, watching as he walked back inside the bathroom.

  “Now we have to wait.”

  “How long?” he demanded, his gaze never leaving the tiny strip.

  “Not long.”

  “Good.”

  Chapter 6

  “Why?” she asked curiously.

  He pointed, a huge glowing smile on his face. She turned to look. The test strip was blue. A solid, not-to-be-mistaken blue.

  “I’m really pregnant,” she said in dazed tones.

  “You’re really pregnant.” He laughed, picked her up, and twirled her around. Then as if remembering he needed to be careful, he did a second twirl much more carefully.

  “You want me to be pregnant?” she accused.

  “I want you to be pregnant,” he confirmed. “I want you and our children for every day we have together.”

  He smiled down at her with so much pride and love in his gaze that she had to wonder what she’d been so scared about.

  “In fact,” he said, “I just love you. Any way you come.”

  God, she was blessed. She reached up and wrapped her arms around his neck. “And I love you too. I’m sorry for being scared to tell you. I should have known.”

  “You should have, and now you do. No more doubts. No more fears. You are meant to be with me.”

  “And what if we’re having twins?” she teased, almost wanting to test him.

  His gaze lit up even further. “Now that would be perfect.”

  “Ha, just one is fine.”

  One might have been fine, but when she was presented with one son and one daughter eight months later, she knew her life was blessed. The last eight months had been a flurry of moving, selling her house, and getting a nursery together, intermixed with special sessions of just holding and talking to her pregnant belly. A time of growing, commitment, and most of all, loving.

  Morgan held the twins carefully. Both were wrapped in tiny blankets embroidered with little matching bikes in the corner. His gaze kept switching from one to the other. “I didn’t think I could ever feel like this. To have a family of my own…” Tears collected in the corner of his eyes.

  She smiled and gently brushed them away. “That you have, now and forever.”
